Raising money for cancer
It started with long time ETU members Wayne Phair and Peter Giampa flagging the idea of a 'head shaving' fund raiser for cancer and ended with ETU secretary Dean Mighell announcing that the union would donate $3000. For Wayne - who parted with a beard of ten years and flowing locks - and Peter - who dispensed with a 35-year-old moustache - it was well worth it.
On 17 December the boys let the shears do the talking, much to the delight of workmates at The Royal Children's Hospital. An interested onlooker was 4-year-old Kayne Harris - son of organiser Arron - who is engaged in his own personal battle with leukemia. We of course wish Kayne and family all the very best. He is a special boy.
The event raised $11000 - $3000 alone from the ETU workers on site - for the hospital's cancer foundation. 'It's amazing that a group of electricians could raise so much money in a mere two weeks. It shows just how generous our members can be on issues such as these. We should also thank the employers for their contribution,' said shop steward Luke Petersen, who has been at the hospital since January 2009.
