Carbon Bill Gets Nod
With the carbon tax bill having passed through the parliament ACTU President Ged Kearney has called for its passing to be the first step towards a 'low-carbon economy.'
“Once the political heat of the moment has passed, Australians will look back on today as a nation-building decision,” Ms Kearney said. “This is nation-building because putting a price on pollution will not only help the environment, but it will transform our economy.'
Ms Kearney believes it will be 'a trigger for industries to adopt new, low-polluting technologies, and give Australian companies a chance to compete in the global low-carbon economy.'
Whilst the ETU supports green technology and believes global warming has to be dealt with, secretary Dean Mighell has called on the government to ensure the burden isn't carried by working people.
