I was under pressure from the company to work harder and ended up injuring myself. Two months into my injury I called upon the union, because things got complicated. The union helped me get free legal advice and representation at a hearing. It's important for me to know where I stand in all of this and the union's been there with me all the way.

Nick, ETU member

I wish I was rich, but I'm not. I have to work because I have to work, I have to fight. Because if I don't fight, I will be stepped on. That's the way it is for working people. Never been any different. We have to fight for everything we get. That's why we're in unions. People who aren't in unions, it's like they don't know the facts of life. Because no-one ever gives us anything without a fight. And that's a fact. Mario, ETU member

1. Seasons Greetings

2002 has been a big year for the ETU Southern States Branch. 2003 promises to be even bigger!

The Union has been attacked by the politically conceived and motivated Royal Commission. It has been involved in a whole range of disputes and has celebrated the 100th year of its activity.

The Branches of the Union throughout Australia have come together in an unprecedented way and are working together to enhance our members' interests.

In 2003, Enterprise Agreements across a range of industries - including the Electrical and Communications Contracting, Metal/ Manufacturing and the Lift industries - will be renegotiated.

The Union will continue to grow, prosper and deliver improvements in wage and conditions to its members. It will develop new services and continue to champion the worker.

Thanks for your continued commitment to the ETU.

Dean Mighell
Secretary, Southern States Branch

4. The AGE

Members at The AGE, Tullamarine, were outraged when the company moved to sack a member last month.

The members protested to management about the treatment received by our member and stuck together, calling a union meeting to resolve the matter.

Members contacted the Union, and within 36 hours the member was back at his job.

A couple of managers at the new Tullamarine site have now decided to move on.

9.Bad Back?

If you’re like most people, you don’t give much thought to your back … until it hurts and when this happens, it’s not only painful, but can dramatically affect your daily life.

What we tend to do is place abnormal demands on our backs by our modern lifestyle habits, such as: too much sitting or slouching, too little exercise, carrying too much weight, incorrect lifting or chronic stress.

By following some simple tips you can reduce your risk of injuring your back.

Badback

• LISTEN TO YOUR BACK
Pain is a warning sign. If what you’re doing hurts, then STOP. Do not try to push through the pain.

• DROP THE LOAD
If you’re over-weight, you’re a candidate for back problems. Try to maintain your proper body weight to avoid straining your back muscles.
Eating a balanced diet provides nutrients that fight the deterioration of the bones in the back.

• STRAIGHTEN UP
Try to maintain a good posture by not slumping in your chair, hunching up over a work-bench or walking around with rounded shoulders. Instead, imagine there is an invisible electric cord from the top of your head to the ceiling lifting you into a tall, relaxed posture, rather than a short, bent over one.

• GET MOVING
Exercise REGULARLY to keep the muscles that support your back strong and flexible. Of particular importance are the lower back and abdominal muscles. Consider warming up like an athlete by stretching before you start your working day, and participate in exercise that you enjoy.

• SLEEP Eeezzzee
Sleep in a comfortable position. On your side in the ‘foetal’ position is usually the least stressful on your back. Sleeping on your stomach puts more stress on your back and neck. And choose a firm sleep surface that allows your spine to maintain its natural ‘S’ curve.

• LIFT CORRECTLY
You don’t have to lift something heavy in order to hurt your back. Picking up something light incorrectly is far more likely to hurt your back than picking up heavy objects correctly. Lifting things away from your body is also likely to cause damage. When you pick up anything, no matter how heavy, get it close to your body, bend your knees and keep your back as straight as you can and don’t twist with it.

• STRESS BUSTING
When under stress, your back, neck and shoulder muscles are often tight. Then a sudden movement can trigger a muscle spasm.
> Learn how to relax
> Take breaks in your day
> Consider many of the alternative therapies such as massage or yoga.

Researchers tell us that positive-thinking individuals will report less back pain, regardless of the amount of perceived stress in the individual’s life. From www.badback.com.au

How do I know what I should get paid?

It can be quite complicated in determining this question. First, you have to determine what agreement covers your employment. Next, you then have to interpret the terms in the agreement. If you were a member, you will get the assistance of experienced union officials and the ETU legal department, who answers such questions like this everyday.

My husband is having problems with his employer and thinks he may be sacked. If he joins the Union will they help?

Members get the benefit of the ETU legal department that can represent them on any employment issues – including unfair dismissal. Non-members will have to get their own legal representation which will cost them potentially tens of thousands of dollars.

My son is a second year apprentice and has been working on his own and he does not get paid for overtime, is this okay for an employer to do this?

It is not okay for the Employer to do this. If your son is a member, the ETU has a designated Apprentices Officer who specializes in issues of Apprentices Supervision and Pay and will assist apprentices who are members on these and other relevant issues to the apprenticeship.
