I was under pressure from the company to work harder and ended up injuring myself. Two months into my injury I called upon the union, because things got complicated. The union helped me get free legal advice and representation at a hearing. It's important for me to know where I stand in all of this and the union's been there with me all the way.

I wish I was rich, but I'm not. I have to work because I have to work, I have to fight. Because if I don't fight, I will be stepped on. That's the way it is for working people. Never been any different. We have to fight for everything we get. That's why we're in unions. People who aren't in unions, it's like they don't know the facts of life. Because no-one ever gives us anything without a fight. And that's a fact. Mario, ETU member

We joined the union, because we wanted more money. We got the latest EBA and a great wage increase. They're the best wages in the whole industry and ETU members are leading the crowd. There's no way we could have gotten the pay rise on our own. Being in the union gave us the power to get it. It's as simple as that.

PAYMENT OPTIONS

The ETU has various payment options available to facilitate the needs of our members.

 Annual Payment

In June each year, members are given the option of paying for the next quarter or the next whole year . By purchasing an 'annual ticket' by the due date each year (June 30) you can save 10% of the cost.

Quarterly Payments

The ETU sends quarterly invoices to all members, excluding members who pay their fees via Direct Debit and Payroll Deductions.

Mailing Your Payment - Simply detach your payment slip (attached to your invoice) and return it together with your cheque or money order in the re-useable envelope we provide. Make cheques and money orders payable to the ETU. Paying By Phone - Call (03) 8329 0000 to pay by Visa, Bankcard or Mastercard (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm).

Paying In Person- We accept cash, cheque and money order payments at our ETU offices (EFTPOS available at our Melbourne and Geelong offices only).

your cheque, savings or credit card account. More info: http://www.bpay.com.au/

 Direct Debit

Direct Debit is a convenient and affordable method of paying union fees from any bank deposit statement accounts (eg Key Card Savings Accounts) and any credit union accounts. Note: Passbook Savings Accounts and Credit Cards are not suitable for Direct Debiting. Direct Debiting will be performed on a weekly basis unless otherwise specified (fortnightly and monthly Direct Debiting also available). ETU membership cards are issued on a quarterly basis to members paying their fees via Direct Debit. PD-C authority forms for Direct Debiting are available from our Melbourne office and are also attached to all new membership application forms.

Payroll Deductions

Payroll Deductions for union fees may be available through your employer (check with your payroll office whether they offer this facility). Your employer will deduct union fees from your wage and remit them to our Accounts Department each month. ETU membership cards are issued on a quarterly basis to members paying their fees via Payroll Deductions. Payroll Deduction authority forms are available from our Melbourne office. Please note this payment method is being phased out due unreliabilty of employers.

How do I know what I should get paid?

It can be quite complicated in determining this question. First, you have to determine what agreement covers your employment. Next, you then have to interpret the terms in the agreement. If you were a member, you will get the assistance of experienced union officials and the ETU legal department, who answers such questions like this everyday.

My husband is having problems with his employer and thinks he may be sacked. If he joins the Union will they help?

Members get the benefit of the ETU legal department that can represent them on any employment issues – including unfair dismissal. Non-members will have to get their own legal representation which will cost them potentially tens of thousands of dollars.

My son is a second year apprentice and has been working on his own and he does not get paid for overtime, is this okay for an employer to do this?

It is not okay for the Employer to do this. If your son is a member, the ETU has a designated Apprentices Officer who specializes in issues of Apprentices Supervision and Pay and will assist apprentices who are members on these and other relevant issues to the apprenticeship.
