ETU Mortality Benefit
The ETU - Looking after our families
"The ETU has never been a union to ignore its members’ needs. From the best EBAs in the business to looking after ETU families in times of need, the ETU is always thinking about its members," says ETU State Secretary Dean Mighell. That’s why the ETU has set up the Mortality Fund, a fund specifically designed to assist ETU families in the sad event of a member’s death.
The Fund has the capacity to make a one-off payment of up to $7000 to a family in need, following the early or unforeseen death of a financial member.
An Unexpected Death
As sad as it might sound, sometimes people do die unexpectedly. And if your family is dependant on your income it could bring devastating consequences for your partner and/or your children.
Giving Members Peace of Mind
Gavin Sones confronted cancer in 2004 but survived, thanks, he says, to the support from PROTECT – the fund established by the ETU to look after members in time of sickness. Had he died, the financial effect on his family would have been catastrophic. ‘I’m married with one child and a wife who works as a nurse. If I’d died in 2005 – at age 41 years – the financial strain on my wife and family would have been horrific,’ he says.
Everyone should know that the ETU is there with such backup support and cutting edge, family orientated benefits. The Mortality Fund is just another example of how thoughtful the ETU is when it comes to looking after a member’s family, especially when it matters most. – Gavin Sones, ETU member
How does a Family make a Claim?
The family needs to satisfy these basic rules to qualify for the Mortality
Fund benefit:
• Only the immediate family of the deceased member – spouse, defacto,
child or parent – is eligible to make a claim.
• The deceased ETU member must have been a contributing financial member of good standing for the five consecutive years prior to his/her death.
• The claim must be made in writing and within six months of the member’s death.
The union considers Mortality Fund claims on the basis of need, then refers them to the Board of Trustees for approval and payment.
